Valentine's Day just got a little more fun with these heart churros! Traditional churros are given a facelift by making them into heart shapes and pairing them with nutella and vanilla mascarpone dipping sauces. They will transport easily and stay intact, so make sure to bring them to your Valentine's Day gathering; they're sure to be a hit!
There's no better way to put a fun spin on Valentine's Day than to make these heart shaped churros! Great for both kids and adults alike, you can eat them for dessert, or breakfast, or even as a sweet snack? There's no limit to when you can eat these heart-shaped delights. I also mention that they're perfect for Valentine's Day (just like these heart jam cookies!), but they would be great at any time during the year!
And if traditional, straight churros are more up your alley, you can use this same recipe and change the shape! The possibilities are endless.
What makes these churros unique is the dipping sauces that go with them. Usually churros are served with a dulce de leche dipping sauce, but these are served with two types of sauces: a vanilla mascarpone sauce and a nutella sauce (if you love nutella, check out this no-bake nutella tart recipe!). And they pair perfectly with the churros' cinnamon sugar coating.
So let's get right into it:
How to Make Heart Churros - Step by Step
Make the vanilla mascarpone and nutella dipping sauces:
In a small saucepan on medium heat, combine mascarpone, whipping cream and vanilla extract. Let them melt together until there are no more clumps (photo 1)
Add the powdered sugar and stir. Make sure powdered sugar is completely dissolved into the mixture(photos 2 & 3)
Set aside (photo 4)
Place the nutella in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for about 1 minute. Set aside (photo 5)
Make the heart churros:
In a medium size saucepan over medium heat, combine water, sugar, salt and 4 tablespoon canola oil (photo 6)
Bring to a boil and remove from heat (photo 7)
Stir in flour until a ball of dough forms (photos 8 & 9) Let dough cool slightly so that you don't burn yourself when piping the churros.
Place dough in piping bag fitted with a metal star tip (photo 1o)
Pipe two strips of dough (photo 11)
Form them together to make a heart shape, ensuring to pinch the adjoining points together so that they stay together when frying (photos 12 & 13)
Heat oil for frying in a deep skillet (photo 14)
Once oil is hot enough to fry, place heart churro on a large spatula (touch up the shape if needed). Place spatula with churro in oil. Once churro starts frying, it will be easy to remove the spatula (photo 15)
Fry until churros are golden brown. Remove with spatula and drain on paper towel (photo 16)
Repeat this process for all churros. Depending on the size of your pan, you will be able to fry multiple churros at once
In a bowl or dish, combine sugar and cinnamon (photo 17)
Coat churros in mixture (photos 18 &19) Serve with dipping sauces and enjoy!
Top Tips for Making Heart Churros:
- I recommend to prepare the dipping sauces before the churros so you can eat the churros soon after you make them, warm!
- The dipping sauces may thicken while the churros are frying, so to soften them up again, just heat in the microwave for approximately 30 seconds.
- To get a good heart churro size, the strips you pipe from the pastry bag should be 6-8 inches long.
- Make sure to pinch the two adjoining points of the heart together so that the churro stays together when frying
